Two journalists sustained injuries while reporting on a violent clash between activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatradal and the Islami Chhatrashibir. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, August 4, in front of the Government Madrasa-e-Alia in the Bakshibazar area of the capital. The injured reporters have been identified as multimedia journalist Nazmul Islam from Samakal and Abdullah Al Mamun from Bangladesh Bulletin.
The confrontation escalated into a series of chase-and-counter-chase maneuvers on the road outside the madrasa. As the situation intensified, activists from both factions began hurling bricks at one another. During the chaos, the journalists who were present to cover the event were caught in the crossfire and sustained injuries from the flying debris.
Eyewitnesses reported that Nazmul Islam was documenting the conflict when a brick struck his ankle, causing a severe injury. Abdullah Al Mamun was also injured during the same incident. Colleagues on the scene immediately stepped in to assist the pair, transporting them to the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital for urgent medical care.
At the hospital, medical staff treated Nazmul Islam’s wound with seven stitches and applied a cast to his leg. Following the initial treatment, he was discharged and is currently recovering at home under medical supervision. Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Mamun received necessary medical attention and has since been released from the hospital.
Recounting the incident, Nazmul Islam explained that he had been positioned behind an electricity pole to safely record video and capture images of the clash. Despite his efforts to maintain a safe distance, a stray brick struck his ankle, resulting in significant bleeding and tissue damage. He noted that his colleagues were instrumental in ensuring he reached the hospital promptly for the required surgical intervention.
