Opening his keynote at the 2026 Arab Media Summit, Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa extended his gratitude for the consistent support shown to the Syrian people by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. President Al Sharaa expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality he received and emphasized his pride in participating in the summit, noting the vital influence of media in fostering effective public discourse. He urged journalists to resist politicization, advocating instead for precise reporting that accurately reflects evolving societal conditions.
Addressing the current state of his nation, the President candidly described the economic hardships Syria has navigated due to unprecedented international sanctions, which he likened in intensity to those leveled against North Korea. Despite these external pressures and the long-term impact of nearly six decades of destruction compounded by 14 years of active conflict, Al Sharaa highlighted significant progress in stabilization. He pointed to the emergence of Syria as a safe transit corridor and a critical element in global supply chains, citing the operational link between Jebel Ali and Tartus as key evidence of this newfound regional stability.
Regarding sovereign policy, the President underscored Syria’s commitment to independent decision-making, specifically citing the complex, self-directed operation to liberate Damascus amidst a dense international military presence. He noted that the government’s recovery strategy is rooted in diligent service to its citizens, even as it manages the lingering legacy of past instability.
Looking toward the future, Al Sharaa outlined an ambitious plan for economic development. The country is moving toward a free-market framework supported by private sector growth, a transition that requires decisive—and occasionally unexpected—policy shifts. This economic roadmap prioritizes the strengthening of social structures, the development of human capital, and the advancement of vocational skills to ensure a resilient foundation for long-term growth. The report also notes that underscoring the crucial role of the media in effective communication, al Sharaa said he was proud to be part of the Arab Media Summit.
