An Italian fighter jet operating under a NATO mandate successfully intercepted and destroyed a suspected Russian drone within Lithuanian airspace on Tuesday. According to the country’s national crisis management centre, the unmanned aerial vehicle crossed the border from Belarus before being neutralized near the settlement of Pratkunai, located just north of Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city.
Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed via social media that the drone was carrying an explosive payload. Military investigators are currently examining the recovered debris to determine the device’s origin. Following a briefing with the flight crews involved, Minister Kaunas stated that the intervention demonstrated “the value of the Atlantic alliance” and “what it means to be an ally.”
Escalating regional tensions

At a subsequent press conference, Minister Kaunas warned that the Russia-Ukraine war has effectively spread beyond its borders. He cautioned that such incidents are likely to continue without a negotiated settlement, though he emphasized his belief that “Putin does not want” a peaceful resolution.
