A heroic rescue effort in Alexandria ended in tragedy when 18-year-old Ziad Mohamed Ahmed Mahmoud lost his life after saving six people from drowning. The incident took place at Bitash Beach, located in the city’s Agami district, where strong waves had pulled the group away from the shoreline.
According to local authorities, Ziad noticed the individuals struggling in the water and immediately entered the sea to assist them. While he successfully brought all six people back to safety, he was overwhelmed by the powerful currents during his own attempt to return to the shore and was swept away.
Emergency response teams were deployed to the scene following reports of the incident. After an extensive search, Ziad’s body was recovered and subsequently transferred to the morgue. Prosecutors have since launched an official investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The Alexandria Central Administration of Tourism and Resorts, which confirmed the victim was a resident of the Dekheila area, issued a statement regarding the tragedy. Officials emphasized that the site is a closed beach, prohibited for public swimming due to hazardous sea conditions and unpredictable currents.
In the wake of the event, the administration has renewed its warnings for the public to avoid entering unapproved or closed coastal areas. Authorities also urged citizens to refrain from attempting water rescues without proper training or equipment, noting that such efforts can rapidly become life-threatening for the rescuer.
Reflecting on his son’s character, Ziad’s father shared that the teenager had long aspired to become a professional footballer. Although he had been accepted into the El Sekka El Hadid Sporting Club, financial constraints had prevented him from pursuing that path. His father noted that Ziad drew inspiration from the humble beginnings and international success of Mohamed Salah, as well as the humanitarian contributions of renowned heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub.
While the six individuals Ziad rescued survived the ordeal, his death has left a profound impact on the local community. His act of selflessness has drawn widespread admiration across Egypt, highlighting the bravery of a young man who gave his life to save others.
