Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is intensifying its night-time maintenance operations to preserve the quality of the city’s infrastructure. By scheduling critical work during low-traffic hours, the authority ensures that road networks remain in top condition while minimizing disruptions for morning commuters.
Currently, the RTA maintains a 95 per cent “excellent” rating across its entire road network. This standard is upheld through a combination of rigorous scheduled assessments and proactive, targeted upkeep of essential assets.
The scope of these night-time operations is comprehensive, covering asphalt repairs, pavement rehabilitation, and the maintenance of vital infrastructure including bridges, tunnels, and stormwater drainage systems. Crews also focus on the upkeep of street lighting, traffic signals, signage, and safety barriers to ensure full operational readiness.
Under the authority’s 2026 preventive maintenance plan, significant progress has already been achieved. By early June, teams had successfully rehabilitated 17 kilometers of asphalt across nine major streets and six districts. These improvements spanned a variety of environments, including highways, arterial corridors, residential neighborhoods, and dedicated cycling tracks.
The scale of pavement maintenance is also expanding, with a target of 90,000 square meters for the current year, marking an increase from the 88,000 square meters addressed in 2025.
To determine maintenance priorities, the RTA utilizes a data-driven approach that incorporates automated asset-data analysis, smart diagnostic systems, and field inspections. These technical inputs are further refined by analyzing traffic volume metrics and feedback from customer reports.
Before any work commences, the RTA implements detailed traffic management plans. These include the deployment of necessary diversions and safety protocols to protect workers and motorists. These measures ensure that all lanes are fully cleared and reopened well before the onset of the morning peak, effectively accelerating infrastructure upgrades while maintaining high levels of network efficiency and public safety.
