What we know about AR Rahman announces memoir ‘Rahman: A Renaissance’: ‘A new chapter begins

Legendary composer AR Rahman has announced his upcoming memoirRahman: A Renaissance. The project, co-authored with writer Rupa Chakravarty, marks a significant shift in how the musician documents his life and work. Rahman confirmed the news on social media this past Monday, sharing a photograph of himself and Chakravarty seated at a piano.

The Creative Vision

In his announcement, Rahman stated, “A new chapter begins.” He described the book as an exploration of the music, ideas, challenges, and influences that have defined his career. Rather than serving as a standard career retrospective, the memoir focuses on the internal processes of his artistry. “My music comes from the constant evolution of my mind,” Rahman explained. He detailed how his personal challenges, aspirations, and dilemmas are deeply interconnected with his experiences of brotherhood, psychological turmoil, and faith, all of which culminate in his music.

Literary History

This is not Rahman’s first encounter with the publishing world, though it is his first as an author. In 2018Notes of a Dream: The Authorised Biography of AR Rahmanwritten by Chennai-based author Krishna Trilok and published by Penguin Random House India, was launched in Mumbai with a foreword by Danny Boyle. At the time, Rahman noted that the process explored corners of his life that had long remained private. WhileNotes of a Dreamwas built from interviews and anecdotes from those around himRahman: A Renaissancefeatures him as a co-author, placing him directly inside the narrative. Chakravarty is positioned as a collaborator bringing her own storytelling voice to the project rather than acting as a ghostwriter.
