Sangeetha, the wife of actor-turned-politician and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, has formally withdrawn the divorce and residency rights petitions she previously filed against him. The legal action, which had been pending before the Chengalpattu District Family Court, concluded following her voluntary request to drop the claims.
The couple, who entered into an interfaith marriage on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Chennai, have two children: a son born on August 26, 2000, and a daughter born in 2005. Despite their long-standing relationship, Sangeetha had approached the court in December of last year, citing personal differences and seeking a dissolution of their marriage alongside residency rights.
Due to the high-profile nature of the case and the security requirements surrounding the Chief Minister, the court had previously granted both parties exemptions from in-person appearances, allowing them to participate via video conferencing. The matter had been scheduled for hearings on three prior occasions before the most recent session.
During Friday’s proceedings, legal counsel for the Chief Minister requested an adjournment due to his obligations in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Assembly session. However, Sangeetha’s legal team insisted that the hearing move forward. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court deferred the case until the afternoon.
When the session resumed, Sangeetha appeared before Family Court Judge Sujatha via video link. She provided detailed submissions for over 15 minutes, after which the court recorded her statement and officially accepted her request to withdraw both the divorce petition and the plea for residency rights.
Following this development, court sources confirmed that the case is now closed. Neither the Chief Minister nor Sangeetha has released a public statement explaining the decision to withdraw the petitions, marking the end of the legal proceedings between the couple.
