Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has formally condemned a series of violent attacks against students, student leaders, and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir at several educational institutions. The incidents occurred on Tuesday at Jagannath University, Dhaka College, and Dhaka Alia Madrasa, following a similar violent event on the night of August 3 at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur. The party’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Parwar, issued a statement on Tuesday denouncing the actions, which he attributed to members of the Nationalist Chhatradal.
In his statement, Parwar expressed that following the July mass uprising, the public and students had anticipated a safer academic environment free from extortion and occupation. He argued that instead of fostering student welfare, the Chhatradal has adopted aggressive tactics reminiscent of past political regimes to establish dominance. He stated that the recent actions, which included targeted attacks on students and journalists at Jagannath University, have surpassed previous records of campus violence.
The statement further highlighted a disturbing incident where attackers allegedly entered the National Medical College Hospital to assault injured students with bats and iron rods while they were seeking treatment. Parwar criticized the university administration and law enforcement for their failure to intervene or protect the victims during these confrontations. He urged authorities to take immediate action to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded that university administrations conduct thorough investigations into these incidents and impose academic disciplinary measures against those responsible. Parwar called upon all educational institutions to ensure a secure environment for students and to adopt a more proactive role in preventing such occurrences in the future, emphasizing that the perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions.
A delegation led by Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat Amir Md. Nurul Islam Bulbul visited the injured students at the Islami Bank Hospital in Kakrail. During a press briefing, Bulbul stated that the attacks at Jagannath University and other campuses were planned, with assailants using bricks, sticks, and sharp weapons with the intent to cause severe harm. He demanded that authorities review video footage to identify and arrest the attackers immediately. The delegation included Metropolitan South Secretary Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud and Assistant Secretary Dr. Abdul Mannan, among other party leaders.
