Hungary has ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave the country, citing “unacceptable” activities incompatible with their diplomatic status. This move marks a notable shift for Budapest, which had remained one of the few European Union allies to Russia following the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Government stance and diplomatic fallout
Anita Orban, Hungary’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, stated on Tuesday that the decision was necessary to protect “Hungary’s security and sovereignty.” She clarified that the expulsion does not mean the country is “breaking off diplomatic relations with Russia.” In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the TASS news agency that Moscow would deliver a “harsh and painful” response.
Historical context and EU reaction
- Under the previous government, Budapest maintained warm relations with Moscow. Former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who lost power last April after 16 years, reportedly told President Vladimir Putin, “I am at your service,” during a phone call last year.
- EU spokesman Christian Wigand described Hungary’s move as a “legitimate decision,” adding that the EU “will continue to closely coordinate” the situation.
- While many EU member states expelled Russian diplomats following the invasion of Ukraine, Hungary had previously refrained from such actions until now.
