A devastating road accident in central Zimbabwe has resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people. The collision, which involved a minibus transporting churchgoers and a haulage truck, occurred on Friday evening at approximately 1830 GMT near Chivhu, located roughly 140 kilometres south of the capital, Harare.
According to police reports, the incident took place when the foreign-registered truck attempted to overtake another vehicle, leading to a head-on impact with the oncoming minibus. Both vehicles were carrying an unspecified number of passengers at the time of the crash. In addition to the fatalities, seven individuals sustained injuries.
Visuals broadcast by the ZBC showed the wreckage of the minibus, which was reduced to a charred shell, while the truck was positioned on the opposite side of the road. The accident site is characterized by flat, remote terrain with minimal roadside vegetation.
This tragedy follows a series of recent road accidents reported across the region. Other notable incidents include a crash in Egypt that left 24 people injured, a separate minibus collision in Egypt resulting in nine deaths, and a truck accident in Suez that killed three people and injured 12 others. Additionally, a runaway truck recently struck several vehicles in Abha. The report also notes that about 140 kilometres (87 miles) south of the capital Harare, police said, the crash occurred at around 1830 GMT on Friday near Chivhu.
