Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has been voted the 2026 Player of the Year in Germany by the association of sports journalists. The 33-year-old England captain secured the prestigious honor on Sunday, finishing ahead of his club teammate Michael Olise in the voting process conducted by 695 association members.

A Historic Achievement

Kane’s victory marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first English player to claim the top football award in Germany. The eligibility criteria for the honor include all Bundesliga players as well as German footballers currently competing abroad.

Record-Breaking Season

  • Kane netted 61 goals across all competitions for Bayern Munich during the previous campaign.
  • He played a pivotal role in the club’s success, helping secure both the Bundesliga title and the German Cup.
  • Bayern Munich also achieved a deep run in the Champions League, reaching the semi-finals under his leadership.
  • On the international stage, Kane scored six goals to guide England to the World Cup semi-finals, where they were eventually defeated by Argentina.

Recognition from Leadership

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl praised the striker’s impact in an official statement, noting, “It’s almost impossible to find the right superlatives to describe Harry Kane –- sometimes I’m at a loss for words.” Eberl further highlighted the magnitude of the achievement, adding, “He’s already been named England’s Footballer of the Year, and now he’s also won it in Germany.”

Club and Individual Success

The awards ceremony also recognized other key figures at Bayern Munich. Manager Vincent Kompany was named Coach of the Year, while the club’s women’s team captain, Giulia Gwinn, received the award for best female player. Following this domestic success, Kane is now considered one of the primary favorites for the upcoming Ballon d’Or, which is scheduled to be presented in London this October. The report also notes that kane, 33, is the first Englishman to win the award while Olise also finished second in 2025, behind Florian Wirtz.
