New York Woman linked to the case Over Alleged ISIS-Inspired Plot to Bomb State Capitol

Federal law enforcement officials announced the arrest of 35-year-old Jessica Bowie on Thursday, August 20, in connection with an alleged plot to bomb the New York State Capitol in Albany. According to charging documents, Bowie intended to construct a homemade explosive device to attack the legislative building before attempting to flee the country for Syria.

The arrest followed a month-long investigation involving an FBI confidential informant who posed as an associate of ISIS. Prosecutors allege that Bowie communicated with the informant via an encrypted messaging platform, where she shared her intent to target the Capitol and expressed support for ISIS ideology. Evidence presented by the Department of Justice reportedly includes photographs of Bowie purchasing bomb-making materials at a Home Depot and conducting reconnaissance at the state government complex.

In recorded communications cited by prosecutors, Bowie stated, “I want to destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators while they are meeting. I want them to lose a lot of important documents as well. I want it to have a affect on the American system.”

John A. Sarcone III, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, emphasized that the defendant’s alleged actions stood in direct opposition to the values of life and liberty held by the American public. Bowie made her initial appearance in federal court on August 20, one day after her arrest.
