Authorities in Baramati, Maharashtra, have taken 38-year-old Sharmila Pravin Jagtap into custody following allegations that she attempted to kill her husband, Pravin. The arrest occurred on Wednesday after the suspect’s father-in-law, 71-year-old Prakash Jagtap, formally reported the incident to the local police station.
According to Assistant Police Inspector Shashikant Ingawale, who is leading the investigation, the assault occurred between July 30 and August 1. Investigators allege that Sharmila first poisoned her husband before striking him with a bat, rendering him unconscious. She then placed the victim inside a rectangular duct at their home, covering him with a cloth to conceal his presence.
The situation came to light when the suspect hired workers to place a heavy stone slab over the duct to further hide the victim. While attempting to position the slab on August 1, the workers noticed movement from within the structure. Upon inspecting the duct, they discovered the husband alive and immediately contacted emergency services via the Dial 112 hotline.
Police responders arrived at the residence shortly after the call, rescuing the victim and transporting him to a hospital, where he is currently in stable condition. Officials noted that the couple has two children, though neither was present at the home during the time of the attack. Investigators believe the incident was triggered by a domestic dispute.
Although the family initially hesitated to involve law enforcement, they eventually filed a complaint, leading to the registration of a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically including charges of attempted murder. Sharmila is expected to appear in court soon, where police intend to request her custody to facilitate further inquiries into the case.
The workers then alerted police through the emergency Dial 112 service.
However, unable to complete the work herself, she allegedly called workers to the house.
