Former Gazipur-5 MP Akhtaruzzaman Arrested by Dhaka Detective Branch

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) apprehended 73-year-old Akhtaruzzaman, the former Member of Parliament for Gazipur-5 (Kaliganj), late Wednesday night. The arrest took place around 10:00 PM during a raid at a residence in the capital’s Gulshan area.

According to an official statement from the DMP media and public relations department, Akhtaruzzaman was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the activities of a banned organization. While the specific case details were not disclosed in the initial announcement, authorities noted that he faces multiple criminal charges, including murder.

Akhtaruzzaman previously served as an MP after winning the Gazipur-3 seat in 1996. In the 12th parliamentary election, he secured the Gazipur-5 seat as an independent candidate after failing to receive a nomination from the Awami League.
