The Supreme Court of India has provided actor Rajpal Yadav a final two-week window to deposit at least Rs2 crore with the court registry. This directive follows a long-standing legal battle stemming from a financial dispute with a private complainant, specifically the owner of Murali Productions.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed significant skepticism regarding the actor’s reliability. During the proceedings, the Chief Justice remarked on Yadav’s history in the matter, stating, “Looking at his past conduct, how can anybody trust him? He’s perfect in doing drama and acting in Bollywood; he’s doing the same thing in court also.”
Despite these concerns, the bench granted the extension after Yadav’s legal counsel committed to depositing the Rs2 crore within the specified timeframe. Furthermore, the actor has been instructed to provide surety for the remaining balance of the disputed funds.
The court extended the temporary protection against arrest for the actor until the next scheduled hearing, which is set for October 5. However, as a condition of this relief, the bench has formally directed Yadav to surrender his passport.
The roots of this litigation trace back to 2010, when the actor secured a loan of approximately Rs5 crore from a Delhi-based company to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. Following the film’s poor box office performance, the production failed to generate sufficient revenue, leaving the actor unable to meet his repayment obligations.
Over the subsequent years, the debt ballooned due to mounting interest and additional charges, reportedly reaching a total of nearly Rs9 crore. This financial failure ultimately culminated in a formal cheque-bounce case against the actor, which has since seen various legal developments, including threats to his ancestral property and previous jail sentencing.
The current judicial focus remains on reconciling the amount claimed by the complainant. Throughout the ordeal, Yadav has maintained his stance on the matter, previously asserting that he cannot be bought while addressing the pressures of the ongoing court case.
