A 51-year-old Sudanese academic, identified as N.A., is facing a dire situation following a catastrophic traffic accident in Ras Al Khaimah that resulted in the death of her husband and left her incapacitated. The professor, who specializes in Artificial Intelligence, was being driven to her workplace on the morning of July 9, 2026, when her husband suffered a sudden heart attack. He lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently collided with a wall.
The impact of the crash has left N.A. bedridden for over a month and a half. She sustained extensive injuries, including a pelvic fracture, severe fractures in both legs and feet, broken thighs, and a fractured right hand. These injuries have rendered her unable to continue her professional duties. Currently, she is the sole provider for her three children, a responsibility she now faces while battling her own physical recovery and the profound grief of losing her husband.
The family’s financial distress is compounded by significant medical costs. Following the accident, N.A. underwent nine surgeries, and the hospital has issued a bill for Dhs148,800. Representatives from the Basmat Emirates Association for Chronic and Humanitarian Diseases, including Chairperson Mahra Sarai, recently visited the family at their home in the Julphar area of Ras Al Khaimah to assess their situation.
Reflecting on her journey, N.A. noted that she arrived in the UAE in 2023 seeking stability amid the ongoing crisis in Sudan. She had been balancing two roles—working in data analysis at a private school during the day and teaching at a charitable school in the evening—while nearing the completion of her PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, and statistics. She expressed deep gratitude for the support her family has received in the UAE, noting that her children have been able to access education and healthcare services. Despite this, she now faces an uncertain future as she struggles to manage the mounting medical debt and the loss of her husband’s support.
