Lucy Davis, the 53-year-old actress best known for her role as Dawn Tinsley in the U.K. edition of “The Office,” has announced that she is living with an “incurable” breast cancer diagnosis. Davis shared the news in a lengthy Instagram post on Tuesday, Aug. 11, accompanied by a video of her reading a poem and ringing a bell in a hospital setting.
“Hi friends:) I wanted to share something with you all that I’ve kept to myself for a while but for various reasons would like to share now,” she wrote. She revealed that she was diagnosed a year and a half ago with Stage 4 breast cancer, which has metastasized to her bones, specifically affecting her spine, right hip, and ribs. She noted that the cancer is currently considered incurable and has progressed beyond the point where chemotherapy is a viable treatment option.
Reflecting on her initial discovery of a lump, Davis admitted she “almost didn’t bother getting it checked” and urged her followers, “don’t ignore anything.” Because the condition is not treatable, she stated she is “trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can.” She also shared her perspective on the challenges of her diagnosis, noting, “I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there’s a lot I have learned from it, and I’m grateful for that.”
Davis further explained that the physical toll of the disease, which includes difficulty standing and walking, has sometimes necessitated the use of a wheelchair due to pain. Despite these struggles, she emphasized the importance of humor in her daily life. “The thing that has been most vital to me is humour. I asked my friends and family to make fun of me as much as possible, and most importantly of all to not treat me like a sick person. There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell,” she wrote.
Regarding her outlook, the actress expressed that she is not afraid of the future. “I’m at peace with it. I’ll see my late dog Gracie sooner than expected, and for me, leaving my physical body just means going home. Any and all grieving is for my family; it’s far harder for them than for me.” She also confirmed her intention to continue her advocacy work for animal rights and to pursue acting, which she described as “one of the biggest joys in my life.”
Davis, the daughter of British comedian Jasper Carrot, became a household name during the two-season run of “The Office” from 2001 to 2003. Her portrayal of the witty receptionist Dawn Tinsley, who shared a notable friends-to-lovers arc with Martin Freeman’s Tim, served as the direct inspiration for the character Pam Beesly in the U.S. version of the show. Beyond her breakout role, Davis has appeared in the 2004 film “Shaun of the Dead,” 2017’s “Wonder Woman,” and the Netflix series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
