Despite the shared name, the storm’s designation is entirely coincidental. Storm names are drawn from a pre-established, decades-old alphabetical list maintained by the World Meteorological Organization in Switzerland. This list rotates every six years, and the name Dolly was first introduced in 1996 as a replacement for Diana following the 1990 season.
As of the 11 a.m. update on August 27, the storm was positioned approximately 1,555 miles east of the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands, tracking westward at 24 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Forecasters anticipate the system will be short-lived, as hostile environmental conditions expected to develop on August 28 are likely to inhibit further intensification.

Regarding the potential for U.S. mainland impacts, AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva noted on August 26 that while the storm is worth monitoring, environmental conditions have generally hindered tropical development this season. If the system remains weak, it could pose a threat to the Bahamas or the U.S. coast; however, if it strengthens, it is projected to turn northward and head out to sea, avoiding the mainland.
