San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, on August 23 during a targeted prostitution sting operation. Speaking by phone on August 24, Conaway remarked, “We haven’t had this much excitement around here since the train derailed,” referring to the 2023 environmental disaster that brought significant national attention to the area. “It’s been a little chaotic the last couple of hours, but yeah.”
The mayor explained that the operation was part of a long-standing initiative to combat human trafficking, an effort that has been active in the region for approximately a decade. Local detective Daniel A. Haueter, who works in coordination with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, led the enforcement efforts. This task force is a multi-agency collaboration involving the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and the East Palestine Police Department.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost previously reported that statewide operations have resulted in over 1,000 arrests since 2019. In May, the Mahoning Valley task force participated in a coordinated effort that led to 10 arrests. Conaway expressed pride in the local police work, noting that the primary goal is to remove individuals from the streets and provide resources for those involved in sex work upon their release from custody.
Regarding the high-profile nature of the latest arrest, Conaway emphasized that the enforcement strategy remains consistent regardless of the individual’s status. “It just so happens we got Mr. York,” he said. “We get people from all walks of life. It’s a shame when anybody feels a need to do this. It doesn’t matter whether they’re a NFL owner or a handyman down the street.”
Conaway, who previously addressed the 2024 Republican National Convention, reiterated that the town is committed to curbing the growing national issue of human trafficking. He stated that the department is focused on identifying those who seek to pay for sex, viewing these sting operations as a vital component of a broader enforcement scope to address the systemic problem.
