Sunday marks the 45th anniversary of the accession of His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, who succeeded his late father, Sheikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi. Since taking office, Sheikh Humaid has guided the emirate through a period of profound evolution, prioritizing the welfare of the people as the core pillar of all developmental initiatives.
Born in Ajman, Sheikh Humaid’s early life was defined by traditional education in mosque study circles, where he mastered the Holy Quran, Hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence. He furthered his knowledge under scholars of mathematics and language, while simultaneously training in horsemanship and martial arts. His transition into governance began early as he served as his father’s primary aide, eventually being appointed Crown Prince in 1960. This role allowed him to contribute significantly to the emirate’s administrative foundations long before his accession.
His commitment to the UAE Federation is deeply rooted in his early career. Starting in 1968, he participated in the critical discussions that preceded the formation of the Union, representing his father, who was one of the nation’s Founding Fathers. For over four decades, he has remained dedicated to upholding the principles established by the country’s founders, ensuring Ajman remains a vital contributor to the UAE’s national progress.
Education has consistently been a focal point of his leadership. In the late 1950s, he actively encouraged students to pursue semi-formal schooling. His dedication to inclusive education led to the opening of the emirate’s first girls’ school in 1960. This legacy of academic support continued with the 1983 launch of the Rashid Bin Humaid Award for Culture and Sciences, which honors excellence in these fields. Furthermore, he championed higher education by sponsoring the establishment of Ajman University College in 1988, which has since evolved into a prominent academic institution.
To streamline governance, Sheikh Humaid issued Emiri Decree No. 4 of 2003, which established the Ajman Executive Council. This body has played a pivotal role in drafting public policies and strategic plans that have modernized the emirate. These administrative efforts, combined with a focus on public safety, have yielded international recognition, with Ajman ranking first globally in perceived safety for several consecutive years, including in 2026.
The emirate’s economic landscape has been transformed through the development of the Ajman Free Zone and the expansion of Ajman Port, both of which have bolstered trade and attracted significant foreign investment. Urban development has also been a priority, with extensive real estate projects and infrastructure improvements—such as new bridges, roads, and public transport—designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
Healthcare and social welfare remain central to his vision. The emirate has seen a rapid expansion of medical facilities that meet high international standards. Beyond physical infrastructure, Sheikh Humaid has emphasized humanitarian efforts, establishing the International Charity Organisation in 1984 as the first of its kind in the UAE. This commitment to philanthropy continues through the Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Foundation, which provides essential support to those in need regardless of their background.
Tourism has also flourished under his directives, with a growing number of hotels and attractions drawing global visitors. By prioritizing Emiratisation and human development, Sheikh Humaid has ensured that the citizens of Ajman are equipped to drive the emirate’s future. His ongoing efforts, in collaboration with the Supreme Council Members and the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, continue to solidify Ajman’s position as a sustainable and prosperous hub within the UAE. The report also notes that in 1960, he was appointed Crown Prince, assuming responsibility and contributing effectively to the emirate’s development. The report also notes that dedicating his life to comprehensive development across education, economy, healthcare, society, security, culture and sport, sheikh Humaid spared no effort or time in advancing the emirate. The report also notes that street lighting and public transport projects, as well as parks and recreational facilities and the organisation of community activities and events, this has included the construction of new bridges and roads. The report also notes that the Ajman Free Zone Authority has continued to achieve strong performance year after year, becoming an attractive destination for thousands of companies and institutions through the facilities and incentives it provides to investors, under his directives. The report also notes that the port has undergone continuous development and major expansions to accommodate increasing vessel traffic and enhance trade between the UAE and countries around the world.
