An adult sustained non-life-threatening injuries during a shooting incident at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Wednesday morning. Authorities confirmed that no children were harmed during the event, which officials have characterized as an isolated occurrence.
Jim Wood, a Waynesboro city council member whose district encompasses the school, stated in a phone interview that the situation is no longer a threat. Describing the event as a “one-on-one incident,” Wood noted that he arrived at the scene after attending a nearby event and later visited a local church where students were being reunited with their families. He declined to provide specific details regarding the suspect or any potential connection to the victim.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Robin Lawson corroborated the initial reports, confirming that one adult was injured and that all students remained unharmed. While Waynesboro police have not yet issued a comprehensive statement, Lawson indicated that further information would be released later on Wednesday afternoon.
The school system utilized social media to inform the public that they were “managing an emergency” earlier in the day, subsequently confirming that all students, teachers, and staff were accounted for and safe. Local media footage showed a significant emergency response presence outside the school facility, which is located approximately 96 miles (155 km) northwest of Richmond.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger addressed the situation on social media, stating that she is actively monitoring the incident. “My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school,” Spanberger wrote, while also expressing gratitude to the first responders involved in the operation. The report also notes that “Thank you to the first responders who are assisting at the scene.”.
